Do we need a version 5? :)

I'm not sure yet, we'll have to see how things play out. I think that's something that I may be able to squeeze in, as I suspect it will take me less time to do that than it would have to do the Solaris update.

Stay tuned.

Kaj, Jeremy,

My co-worker the CCIE did strongly recommend the use of Cisco's VPN client, but if I was going to use IPSec I wanted something that uses the built-in IPSec "raccoon" driver from Mac OS X (whose BSD subsystem is, of course, derived from FreeBSD). I'd also heard numerous horror stories from people who'd run into problems with the Cisco VPN client causing stability issues on their Macs. For that reason, I preferred not to use the Cisco VPN client and use a third-party IPSec solution at first. While my co-worker was very gracious in working with me to make a third-party client work, he did strongly recommend using the Cisco client. Good question, though!

Out of curiousity, Scott, if you were working with one of your CCIEs to set up IPSec on a Cisco device, why didn't he recommend ones of Cisco's own VPN Clients?

Is there a particular reason you didn't want to use the Cisco VPN Client (CVC)? It works quite well on Win32, Linux and OS X (both PPC and Intel). If you're into Vista 64-bit you need to use their SSL VPN Client (SVC) instead. Both clients wil work against IOS nowadays after SSL VPN feature parity in 12.4T.

Scott, I've used your article as a reference point numerous times. Thanks!

I have 15 VM's that I run a weekly FULLVM snapshot against. The problem I have is that the VCB snapshot takes HOURS! I ran create a snapshot thru VIC and it's completed in a few minutes or less. I've copied the syntax I use to snapshot the servers below.

Is there a better/faster way?

"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\vcbmounter" -h wscadm01 -u XXXXXXX -p XXXXXXXX -a name:NWWSQL2 -r f:\mnt\NWWSQL2-FullVM -t fullvm -m san -M 1

Actually, Brian, there's three of us.

Truth is, I've finally perfected that cloning process that Greg asked about back at Datanet, and my clones just decided they wanted to branch off into new areas. Nobody told me that was cheating... :-)

Hi Scott,

All Windows machines are banned from both our lab environment and also our production networks. At the moment we're kind of stuck with VMware Server with ESX installs just waiting for cross-plattform management tools. I've registered with Bluebear for a Beta to no avail. Could you please send me an invite?

Regards,

Peter
