Mastering VMware vSphere 4 is Out!

As many of you already know, since the beginning of the year I’d been working on a virtualization book, Mastering VMware vSphere 4. Today I received word from my publisher that the book has been officially released from the warehouse! It’s finally out!

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this release. It’s been so much work, and now I’ll finally get to see the fruits of my labor in real, physical form! As soon as I read the message from my editor I called my wife, Crystal (follow her on Twitter). I think she’s more excited than I am!

I’m sure there will be lots of questions about when Amazon will start shipping pre-orders. Although the book has been released from the publisher’s warehouse, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Amazon will start shipping out right away. I’m hoping that pre-orders will start shipping very soon, and as soon as I have more information I’ll post something here on the site as well as post an update via Twitter (feel free to follow me as well). As of right now, I don’t have any firm information on when pre-orders will start shipping, so I can’t really give you any dates. Sorry, folks!

Thanks to everyone who has helped raise awareness of the book and thanks to everyone who has already pre-ordered a copy. Your support has been tremendous! Feel free to continue to spread the word!

I checked today and it still said awhile before the release. None of the vSphere books are released yet it seems.

Congrats Scott… I know from experience how writing a book can really suck away any “free” time you may have had, and how it eats into your family time if you aren’t careful. So again, congrats, and I wish you and the book well of course. I know it will be a success and an awesome read for people to learn vSphere.

    Best.
    David

I’m a few chapters into this book and really enjoying it. Thanks much Scott!
Your documentation on the vcenter upgrade is concise and covers all the critical bases. I’ve read through the upgrade, installation, vum guides from vmware and was left with some questions, especially regarding the db setup. Your book absolutely clarified all of my questions. Money well spent! Especially when it was my employer’s dollars. ;-)

Great book, thank you for taking the time to write it. One small thing, on page 290 you indicate that using the GUI to SvMotion and selecting the Thick option eagerzeroedthick’s the vmdk. After repeated attempts I have found this not to be the case. While migrating a Thick VM it remains zeroedthick. just thought I would let you know. Perhaps migrating from Thin to Thick using the GUI does the eagerzeroedthick-ering of the vmdk. I’m using this KB to determine the state of the vmdk: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1011170 Thanks again! When is the 4.1 update coming?

  28. slowe’s avatar

Mike, thanks for the feedback. I’ll double-check that stuff on the eager zeroed thick VMDKs; I appreciate you pointing that out.

As for an update to the book, the next update will coincide with the next major release of VMware vSphere, whenever that might be; the publisher opted not to do an update for 4.1.

    Thanks!
