Hi David, I will agree with you that the need for snapshots or vmotion is probably not needed in a remote tool such as VMM. I guess my thought is if we can have it, why not. If I have a host that loses a power supply or something of that sort, I can quickly vmotion them until I get to the office to resolve the problem. Same with snapshot, if one of our IT members wants to do an upgrade on the fly I can quickly snapshot from wherever I am.

However, I do agree with you where less can sometimes be more. There are some issues with vCenter mobile and it was kind of clunky and hard to find your way around. VMM was very clean other than a login issue I had with the beta version on my BB.

As for us, we still haven't adopted either but with the low price of VMM, it will be hard to pass up.

Thanks David.

nfritsch, good comments! Yes, vCenter Mobile Access does (or should I say will since it isn't released yet) provide you with a few more capabilities such as snapshots and vMotion. Out of the gate, we wanted to provide people with the features they would need from a remote usability use case. And I think we accomplished that. We also wanted to make sure people could manage their environment remotely from a single device, no matter which virtualization platform they use. We're covering VMware Server, VMware ESX 3.5 and 3i, VMware vSphere 4, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer 5.

How important to you is taking a snapshot or moving a machine via vMotion from a remote device? Just curious if you or any other VI Admins think this is a common task, something done once in a while, or an emergency use case.

Are there other features missing that you think you would require on a regular basis?

The reason I ask, most of the folks I've spoken with planned on using this technology on weekends, when out of the office and away from a computer, etc.

I am glad to hear that you used the product and found it useful. Very good feedback!

Scott, how do you think vCenter Mobile Access will affect this product? I've used both and tend to like vCenter Mobile Access just a little better. I tested Hyper9 VMM on my BlackBerry and found it very useful, however, vCenter mobile access allows me to take snapshots, vmotion virtual machines, etc., which is more than VMM allows me to do.

Which one do you see becoming the leader in mobile access? Any word on the further development of vCenter mobile access?
