One thing I keep hearing from my customers is that they don't see VDI as a real solution for mobile users. Guys like me who spend more time in their car or at a Starbucks between meetings than they do behind a desk. I've just got my hands on a Wyse X90 and I'm gonna go 100% VDI for the month of June and blog about the experience, good and bad.

bj79,

The one and only request I make here with regard to comments is full disclosure. Since your e-mail address is associated with the company you are recommending, I can only assume that you work there, and yet you did not bother to provide full disclosure. That is bad form. I welcome your comments, but please be sure to provide disclosure as to your affiliations and associations.

A really interesting green computer technology I found is Userful Multiplier. It's where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too.

I (as a VDI guy at EMC) definitely see a lot more interest in VDI recently specifically in exploring OpEx and CapEx savings which makes sense when companies are looking to be as lean as possible in this economic climate. The general consensus from customers I've spoken with is that VDI taken as a whole is in it's teenage years - lots of promise, but not quite mature enough for a wholesale investment.

I am seeing lots of pilot programs with > 500 desktops so people are definitely testing the waters getting ready to jump in when the time is right. I tend to agree with Brian Madden's comment that 2010 will actually be the year that VDI takes off.

While customer reticence is most assuredly a factor in the lack of VDI proliferation in the marketplace, one must also take into account that it has only been recently (couple of years) that VDI solutions were viable for most enterprises, given limitations in product maturity and efficacy. Couple that with "poor" implementations of technologies, it's no wonder that VDI is not more widespread.

Because of product maturity, marketing by the market players (VMware, Citrix, etc) has been ratcheted up significantly within the last 6 months alone. So maybe this IS the year of VDI...time will tell.

Usability is another critical concern for any enterprise, therefore, it takes a brave executive to move his organization into that arena. As Eric says, "the most successful implementation address end user concerns".

Pilot, pilot, pilot...

Our largest hurdle is customer buy in, they feel like they are "losing" their pc, and that we are trying to contol, and inhibit their machines individuality.....which we are :)
