I’m Writing a Book!

On the heels of being selected to speak at Virtualization Congress 2009, I’m also very excited to announce that I will be writing a book!

This is a lifelong dream of mine and I’m absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity. (Although I suspect I may change my tune after everything is said and done!) While I can’t disclose any of the details around the book just yet, I will say that it is virtualization-related and—quite obviously—I’m hoping it will be a tremendous success. We’re shooting for publication in the first half of this year.

If there are any experienced authors out there who are interested in sharing some tips and tricks with this first-time author, please drop me a line. I’d certainly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

    Scott,

Good luck with it, look forward to seeing you write. My buddy, David (Marshall) is guiding me constantly on my own secret book on Virtualization/Cloud Computing which we expect to release by Q2/Q3.

It is indeed a great experience, although meeting project deadlines on every chapter is still something I’m struggling with ;-)

    Hi Scott,

Great to hear your writing a book. After reading many of your blog posts I’ve been inspired to start my own blog. It’s definitely what I’d call a work in progress. I’m sure myself and many others will gain even more inspiration and useful knowledge from your book. Looking forward to reading it. Best of luck.

Good luck Scott. It isn’t that hard. I wrote a book for Cisco Press a few years ago and the hard part is staying motivated. Planning is everything. Start with a comprehensive outline and keep developing the content from that. You’ll be done before you know it.

Backup your files!!!! :) This was my fault one times…

Kudos and congratulations Scott! I think an important part of writing a book is to try not to neglect the family too much as you seek peace, quiet, and seclusion while you do your writing. Try to maintain some balance. I look forward to your book.

    Hello Scott,

Congratulations on writing a book! I am just finishing up some revisions of a book I am writing now. My book is also virtualization related (a quick search for “Harley Stagner” on Amazon will give you the scoop). If you would like some more details on the process that I am going through, feel free to email me.

    Good luck!

Scott – I can’t imagine a better candidate for the authorship of the book… Jason’s advice is important, and count me in to help you in any way I can!

Congrats, and good luck, Scott! Jason is right on. Stay focused on what’s important – your family. I’ve been down the book writing path a few times, and as I think you already know, the most important thing is value. Too many authors earn a living simply rephrasing existing vendor documentation and help files. I think that those types of books are a dying breed. Books that have information not found on the Internet and are a repository for tips, scripts, and real world experience are the only ones I bother with today. I got that advice very early on from a CommVault colleague (Mike Dahlmeier) and it has helped me tremendously. Each chapter will probably take you about twice as long as you think it will, and computer book authors don’t tend to get rich off of book proceeds. For the time, publishing articles is much more lucrative. Still, publishing a book is a lifetime accomplishment and one you’ll be very proud of. Also, you have never taken me as a guy motivated by money. So writing a book will give you the perfect forum to share your knowledge while getting to accomplish something many people dream of doing. Good luck!

Honey – I am so proud of you. I know you can do this and it will be great! Remember, the kids and I support you and we will do whatever we can to make this process run smoothly and work for you. Reading what people are saying about you writing a book is encouraging. I’m happy you have so much support. The best part is that you aren’t arrogant about it, you are humbled and encouraged. That’s what makes you so easy to like, or in my case…love :) !

    Scott,
Thanks for bookmarking my article on Nexus 1000V. My traffic doubled overnight because of that, so thanks a bunch!! :-)

Congratulations on the book deal and the site sponsor!! Just goes to show that persistence and hard does pay off.

    Cheers,
    Brad

Best of luck with the book, Scott. If your book is as well written as your blog postings it will be a great read!

    Hi Scott,

Writing a book is definitely a lot of work and it is unlikely to make you famous or rich :)

It can be a lot of fun though. I think Chris Wolf’s comments are very good.

I am a co-author of “Running Xen: A Hands-on Guide to the Art of Virtualization” (http://runningxen.com/). It took a bit longer than expected to finish and keeping up with a fast moving technology such as Xen is a lot of work. A book website is a good place to keep supplementary resources and the like.

It is a good idea to get feedback early and often, especially from other experts in the field.

I hope the you write about virtualization standards in the cloud (I really like this post:

    )

Good luck, have fun with it, and let me know if you want a copy of our book to review ;)

    Scott,

Best of luck to you….I wish that i could find the time to do a core dump of what I have floating around in my noggin… I’m pretty sure that I have about 2 or 3 TB of good knowledge and about 6 or 7TB of useless knowledge….LOL…

Nice to see that your family is backing you 100%…. Your a lucky guy!

Congrats and best of luck! I think a comprehensive book on this topic is needed and would be well received and your expertise on the subject should ensure success. I’ll look forward to adding it to my tech book collection.

Congratulations indeed! After taking a stroll through Barnes and Noble this past weekend I was reminded that virtualization books are truly few and far between. Most that you find are nothing more than extended user manuals and/or sales tools. I do wish you the best of luck, and I know that whatever you produce will be a solid technical piece of material.

Just like Boche and Chris stated earlier, keep your priorities in order – family first as it should always be.

Like the others, if you ever need assistance – feel free to drop me a twit or email.
