Phil,

Yes, you're right--that configuration guide isn't all that straightforward. Hopefully the improvements made in clustering with Windows Server 2008 will make Melio FS setup with Hyper-V much simpler.

As for TechNet...I'll bite my tongue on that one. :-)

Scott, I just checked out the Sanbolic doc on setting up MS VirtualServer 2005 using MelioFS to enable "Live" migration and I must say its not easy (http://www.sanbolic.com/pdfs/MSCS_Virtual_Server_Configuration_Guide.pdf).
The document also references a couple of Technet docs which I tried to access, but alas Technet was not responding. Maybe the parent partition had issues or they were patching it ;)

NateL, Brett,

Thanks for the additional information guys. I know that everyone reading will find that useful.

In response to your question, Brett, I think we all know why marketing never matches reality--if it did, sales would be a LOT lower than they are otherwise.

In regards to the question of VM interoperability between XenServer and Hyper-V, and the "Citrix claim of the ability to take a XenServer VM, move it to Hyper-V, and boot it right up", that very topic was recently addressed on the XenServer Support Fourms.

Despite the Citrix marketing, the answer from Citrix support is that it "does not currently work" and as for availability, "It may take as long as a year, yes. It's a lot of work."

Why does marketing never match reality??

For a response to question #3, check out the thread i posted on the citrix xenserver forums:

http://forums.xensource.com//thread.jspa?messageID=16023

I had the same question and by their response, seems that we wont be seeing any interoperability between Citrix and Hyper-V anytime soon, despite all of the marketing announcements we've been hearing about it.

Ernie,

A clustered file system is available, just not from Microsoft. :)

For smaller environments, the "one LUN per VM" arrangement might not present too terrible a management headache, but as the environment scales it will quickly grow out of control.

No clustered filesystem is a showstopper. The requirement of a lun for every VM is something I would expect from a very immature product. Surely MSFT is better than this.

Duncan, John,

The road being followed by Microsoft for their virtualization solution is a typical Microsoft road--create a solution that is "good enough" for a large number of users, then enhance it over time. Despite the fact that VMware has a technical lead, they will have to continue to innovate heavily to beat being "good enough."

The one area Microsoft does have a leg up on VMware is in the management strategy. Again, using SCVMM 2008 to federate multiple VC instances gives Microsoft a "trojan horse" into the virtualization environment, opening the door for Hyper-V.

A lun for every VM will not make things easier indeed. And relying on a partner to fill this gap seems to easy, it seems to me if they did not have time enough to develop this themselves and came up with an easy way out.

In the end Hyper-V is not even near the capabilities ESX has today. It's a good start but they've got a long road ahead.
