To your first point about Exchange support. MS Exchange is supported on VMware and other non-Microsoft virtualization solutions under the general support article. From the Exchange support KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320220/):

Microsoft has a general support policy for running Microsoft software in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software. The policy that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article also applies to any version of Exchange Server that is running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software:
897615 [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897615/] Support policy for Microsoft software running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of VMware customers running Exchange in production today and getting the support they need. Of course, customers themselves are the magic key to getting support. You don't get what you don't ask for.

The passthrough authentication is hit or miss. I've been playing with it a while for some custom code I am writing, and it does not always work correctly.
